In my opinion, one of the worst things you can do is go through your life working in a career you dislike. Considering that most of us already spend a majority of our time working, it seems such a waste to do it in a field that you have no desire to be in. My career started out in web developing. In the beginning it was great. I learned a ton, had fun, but over several years the day to day stress of deadlines, client revisions, and more took its toll on my menta and physical well-being.To put it plainly – I was miserable. Many people go to work each day feeling the same way. The dread of walking into work and doing the same boring tasks can make anyone want to quit. The effects of working in a career you hate are many. One common trait of a career hater is becoming overly materialistic. In order to make up for the lack of joy that comes from a satisfying career, one will begin purchasing material items such as expensive cars, clothing, gadgets, and so on.Another negative effect includes becoming withdrawn from family life and social activities. Most of the time, someone who hates their career is already overworked and burned out. Work takes over their life and they find little joy in what really matters: family, friends, and themselves. Personal time is put on the back burner.I know these symptoms all too well. The good news is, there is a way to figure out how to find a career you love and transition into it.One thing that I never did was take vacations. I always worried in the back of my mind that my job would be gone when I got back. Needless worry to say the least, but I wasn’t the only one. Other co-workers confided in me that they had the same fear.If you have vacation time, I recommend taking it. When you go on vacation focus on the activities that bring you the most joy. These activities may be the trigger to what you would enjoy doing for a living. For example, once I left my former job, I realized that I had a passion for health and fitness so I created a business out of my passion.Being on vacation gives you time to get out of the 9 to 5 frame of mind. You have time to do fun things and to find out what your passion truly is. I have read many stories of corporate executives who gave up their 6-figure salaries to run businesses such as giving surfing lessons on island paradises. This doesn’t mean you will build a business in some exotic vacation spot. The point is, you will let your creativity come to life and figure out what you are truly meant to do.Career change sounds scary but with proper planning and focus, it can be done and you can be a much happier person for it!
